We’re right here, the Close Up weekender starts tomorrow with more amazing artists than you shake a very reasonably priced ticket at. Hosted in the heart of London with over 20 bands and artists across multiple rooms over three days in, Close Up promotions take over Hoxton venue Colours with help from the main component in everyones favourite bar snack, Jagermeister, who’ll be providing a custom bar/stage in the courtyard. So to get you right in the mood, here’s our final artist interview before the event as London indie-pop band Castells who talk about Close Up, influences and the future.

How did you all get together and where did the name come from?

So Connor (Lead vocalist) & Marc (drummer) have known each other since they were 4 years old and have played in bands together since the age of 15. During his time at secondary school Marc met Rob (guitarist) and they became friends pretty quickly after they both discovered their shared love for rock and pop-punk music. Rob also played in a local band with his friend Matt, who would later become the bassist of Castells. After their time in the other bands not working out Connor, Rob and Marc attended reading festival and decided to give the music thing another go after feeling inspired by what they saw from some of their favourite bands. Fast forward a few years to 2017 and Matt joined them which became the line up it is today. The band spent the majority of 2017 figuring out their sound but knew they wanted to have their first single released in December of 2017 as they had a gig scheduled for early 2018. At this point the band still didn’t have a name and they needed to think of something fairly quickly. After spending some time discussing potential band names they decided on ‘Castells’ which is a play on guitarist Rob’s surname ‘Castelino’.

Where does a lot of your inspiration for songwriting come from? Do you have a specific writing process or have a theme?

Most of our lyrical writing comes from experiences we’ve personally had. We’re inspired by all kinds of experiences both positive and negative. We feel music needs to feel honest and writing from true scenarios helps that.

If you could listen to one album for the rest of your life, what would it be?

I’m sure all of our individual answers would be different but if we had to choose one for the whole band it would be a toss up between ‘Rumours’ by Fleetwood Mac or ‘Come on over’ by Shania Twain.

If you could collaborate with one artist, who would that be?

Someone who would bring something completely fresh to our sound. Collaborating with Post Malone would be amazing.

If you could support one band/artist (past or present) who would it be?

15 year old us would never forgive us if we didn’t say a 2010’s pop-punk band. Probably between All Time Low or A Day To Remember. Not sure how well we would fit into the line up but Atleast we make the 15 year old emo kids within us proud.

Are you excited for CloseUp Festival 2022?

Definitely, we can’t wait!! It’s a great line up this year so we’re buzzing to be on it.

What have you got planned for the next 12 months?

Without giving too much away we’re releasing a lot more music and playing bigger and better shows. We’ve just come out of the studio and the new songs are sounding great. We’re excited to get these next 12 months going.

What tips would you give for aspiring artists who want to go into the music industry?

Write music you love and are proud of. Whether it’s everyone’s cup of tea or not is not important. If you believe in what you do and are your true self there will be people out there who can relate and will be invested in your music. Play as many gigs as you can at the beginning as that’s the best way to get better and figure out what works and what doesn’t. Finally, be fully dedicated as it’s a lot time, money and effort involved.
