Not long to go now until the big weekender! We at Shoplifters Union thought it was time to treat you all to another Close Up Festival exclusive. Next up on our countdown is bouncy indie pop duo, APRE. It’s almost difficult to describe APRE as they’re quite the infusion of indie, pop and electronica but it goes down well like liquid gold. 2022 is a big year for the duo as they started the spring with the release of their debut album, A001 and we can’t wait to see some of this on the setlist! I am especially hopeful that their 2020 hit, Without Your Love makes an appearance!
How did you both start working together, and where did the name come from?
After a chance encounter where Charlie’s gran employed a penniless student (aka Me) to mow her lawn. Charlie invited me into his studio and we got along too well not to make music together. One of the first things in fact that came out was our single ‘All Yours’. The name Apre came from a love of France we both shared. We decided it looked better with 4 letters so we got rid of the s.
Where does a lot of your inspiration for songwriting come from? Do you have a specific writing process or have a theme?
Mostly from each other! Being in a room together and trying to make ideas to impress the other person is our fuel. It normally starts with a music loop or a riff and then develops into an instrumental over which Charlie will scat and come up with melodies. The inspiration behind the lyrics then comes from whatever we are both going through, often starting from a conversation between us.
If you could listen to one album for the rest of your life, what would it be?
In Rainbows – Radiohead (Jules)
If you could collaborate with one artist, who would that be?
If you could support one band/artist (past or present) who would it be?
Are you excited for CloseUp Festival 2022?
Very!! It will be our first gig of 2022 and the first chance to hear our mixtape A001 live since it’s been out.
What have you got planned for the next 12 months?
We are back in the studio working on new music as we speak, so a debut record at last seems to be on the horizon. But we also go on tour later this year, to some parts of the UK!
What tips would you give for aspiring artists who want to go into the music industry?
Learn how to produce your own music, it means you don’t have anyone else ruining your songs.
